BUILDING A NEW GOLF LEGACY AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY

As the new Director of Golf for Howard University, Coach P will have the opportunity to welcome the first members of the men’s and women’s golf teams. As he said recently in an article that appeared in The Undefeated, “I’m trying to find some polished, refined players. I’m also trying to find some players that I know can be great with a lot of attention and a lot of love and a lot of work, a lot of elbow grease, so to speak. And I’m also looking for a lot of young people that, No. 1, they want to do big things, they want to change the world. They want to make a difference in somebody’s life. You know, those are the type of folks I’m going after.”

As you may already know, Coach P was recently invited to serve as the first Director of Golf for the newly established men’s and women’s golf teams at Howard University in Washington, DC. The impetus for the golf program came from Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry who committed $6 million of support for six years. Sam Puryear was my coach for one year. During that one year, Stanford hoisted a national championship trophy and crowned five All-Americans. While on the course success speaks to Sam’s coaching abilities, his enduring accomplishments came off the course. First and foremost, Sam is a mentor of men. While he can teach the fundamentals of a flop shot or dissect a yardage book, his greatest lessons are life lessons. Sam taught us that it is better to understand than to be understood, to cherish and respect our loved ones, endure life’s ups and downs with dignity, and to appreciate and share life’s blessings. Years have passed now since our dream season, I still count Sam as a close friend and feel incredibly lucky to have been coached by him.
