BUILDING A NEW GOLF LEGACY AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY

As the Director of Golf at Howard University, Coach P has put his winning philosophy in place. The Bison Golf program is currently the number #1 ranked minority serving institution in America. The Bison captured the 2022 MEAC Championship and the 2022 PWCC Minority Championship during the first 18 months of their program’s existence. The program has thrived academically with its student-athletes from all over the world. As Coach P is quoted in articles in The Washington Post, ESPN, USA Today, and HBCU Gameday, “I’m trying to show the country that there are a lot diamonds in the rough at some of our smaller institutions that need to be polished. My goal is help all of their dreams come true. I’m also trying to find some players that I know can be great with a lot of attention and a lot of love and a lot of work, a lot of elbow grease, so to speak. We are trying to serve as that North Star. I want players that aren’t afraid to change the world. And I’m also looking for a lot of young people that want to make a difference in somebody’s life. You know, those are the type of folks I’m going after. “

As you may already know, Coach P was recently invited to serve as the first Director of Golf for the newly established men’s and women’s golf teams at Howard University in Washington, DC. The impetus for the golf program came from Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry who committed a seven-figure donation to support the program for six years. Sam Puryear was my coach for one year. During that one year, Stanford hoisted a national championship trophy and crowned five All-Americans. While on the course success speaks to Sam’s coaching abilities, his enduring accomplishments came off the course. First and foremost, Sam is a mentor of men. While he can teach the fundamentals of a flop shot or dissect a yardage book, his greatest lessons are life lessons. Sam taught us that it is better to understand than to be understood, to cherish and respect our loved ones, endure life’s ups and downs with dignity, and to appreciate and share life’s blessings. Years have passed now since our dream season, I still count Sam as a close friend and feel incredibly lucky to have been coached by him.
