NOTE FROM COACH P: The time has finally arrived. My book is now available for purchase on Amazon. Please go on buy a wonderful tale of four incredible families overcoming a ton of obstacles.

Young people are not disposable regardless of the melanin in their skin.

Samuel G. Puryear, Jr. was blessed to meet Brandon, Shelton, Willie, Eric, Rod and their families, who lived in a crippling, drug-infested, dysfunctional environment in Atlanta’s East Lake neighborhood. Amid the blight shone two beautiful golf courses, which helped change their lives and shaped an entire community.

Samuel tells the astonishing story of social injustice, a false accusation and its conceivable impact, and how their resilience met with youthful naivety enabled these kids to blossom into wonderful adults. Their journey of overcoming adversity allowed a bevy of dreams to come true, although some arrived hobbled and bandaged.

Diamonds in the Rough was written to serve as an example to other youth and families. Success is often dressed as a stranger, but upon closer inspection, it is only our reflection in an unpolished mirror. This empowering book shows that faith, inspiration, and hope are innate to each of us.

Prepare for a wonderful 2020 golf season with Elev8 Sports Academy, specializing in providing quality training programs for the betterment of young golfers. From golf skill specific training, Elev8 focuses on the needs of the individual athlete. At Elev8, quality is the name of the game. We work to make sure that each athlete is prepared to compete at every level. Our programs are designed to not only assist athletes with the physical skills, but also to develop the mental toughness necessary to be successful in sports and in life.

We have created an incredible winter golf camp at Troon North in Scottsdale, AZ that will prepare all junior golfers for the next phase of your golf development.

Troon North Golf Club stands as a hallmark of the Scottsdale desert golf experience with two 18-hole courses stretching through the natural ravines and foothills in the shadows of Pinnacle Peak. Giant granite boulders lie strewn across the rugged landscape of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, where Troon North Golf Club combines iconic golf with the visual sensation of desert landscape, providing a standard unmatched in the American Southwest.

Although the coed camp is designed for aspiring collegiate golfers, it will serve as a great springboard for any junior looking to take their game to the next level. The camp will focus on fundamentals, daily course assessments, long game, short game, college preparedness, nutritional and fitness support and putting. Each day will conclude with an evening session at the facility. The evening sessions will consist of tournament scheduling, recruiting, college prep, course management, goal setting and a daily recap.

Saturday and Sunday will begin with a collegiate morning golf workout before beginning the day on the course to practice and play. Lunch and dinner will be provided each day.

Being a Mom of a prospective college golfer is not easy.   You are not only your child’s biggest cheerleader, secretary, dietitian, chauffeur… but also the one in most cases that is standing on the 18th green waiting to support them after a good or a bad round.   You have driven 3-4 hours, booked a hotel in a city that may only have a few choices for a “nice” hotel,  tried to find a healthy option for dinner, loaded and unloaded the car, made sure the coolers were filled with cold drinks and healthy snacks, reminded your child to check his golf bag to make sure there were extra balls, gloves, etc. It is rewarding and I could not imagine doing anything else, BUT I can not imagine doing it without the help of Sam.

There have been many times when my dining room table has been filled with schedules listing tournaments all over the U.S. and trying to decide which ones to play in.   Again without Sam’s help weeding out the tournaments that are “not that impressive” in the eyes of a college coach is invaluable.

Then there is the dreaded college golf resume that has to be updated often – basically after every tournament, and selecting which excel spreadsheet is the most impressive to use?    Every website lists a different version, but still the question remains, which one is the “perfect one”.  I also still have to be cognizant and remember not only your child’s results for the tournaments but the yardage, par, location, score and every basic detail that ordinarily seemed rather innocuous.

Please don’t forget the plethora of follow up your child has to do with the coaches. The calls and emails can be overwhelming.  How can a 16 year old keep up with all of this in addition to golf practice, tournaments, AP classes…. and yes their social life.   That means that us parents need to help do this.

We also can’t  forget the NCAA guidelines, which change often like the seasons on college recruiting.    They have changed at least three things since we started this process.   Sam keeps up with all of that for you.

If you are one of those parents who can do all this without help CONGRATULATIONS!    I applaud all of those that can, but for the hundreds of us Moms/Dads that are multi tasking helping our children with college recruiting while working and taking care of other children in the family and keeping the house going strong….. this is where I can say without hesitation THANK GOODNESS for Sam Puryear!

Sam will be your child’s 2nd biggest cheerleader and supporter.   He will be the person you call when you want to pull your hair out because your child missed a 1 foot putt for the third tournament in a row.    He will also be that person you call when you child qualifies for a big national tournament because together you have helped them get to this point.   He will laugh with you and laugh at you (in a good way).   He will listen when you have told him the same thing 10 times.   He will also keep every conversation confidential – which in the world of recruiting is key for your child.   He will go to bat for your child with college coaches and be happy to make phone calls to them on your child’s behalf.   He will call/text your child after a good round to congratulate them and after a bad round to encourage them.

So if you are looking the take some of the stress off of your shoulders in this mind boggling world of college golf recruiting I would highly recommend Sam.    His services are invaluable.   And although you never know what the future holds for your child I can truly say that we would not be where we are today without Sam.

DECEMBER 13, 2016

“Believe in your self, believe in what you are working on and believe in the people around you. If you want to be an eagle, you don’t spend your time with pigeons.” — Sam Puryear

In his six years coaching golf at Queens University of Charlotte, coach Sam Puryear has always looked for the same thing: “disciplined, academically astute self-starters. I look for young people that are motivated.”

That motivation should start young. “Fundamentals and a relentless work ethic are essential to all really good junior players,” he says.

What should the junior golfer be working on relentlessly? Puryear’s top three things are “the mental game, fundamentals and developing a great short game.”

Involved with golf his entire life, Puryear inherited his love of the game from his Dad. “I grew up on a golf course in Winston-Salem,” he says. Now he enjoys following all golfers, not one in particular. Although he does “especially enjoy following guys on the PGA Tour that I have coached at the collegiate level.”

After all, it’s a chance for him to see them translating the skills they honed with him to the tournament environment. “Tournaments are very important,” he said. “They totally resemble life. The bounce back factor is the most important element in playing in tournaments. There are a lot of shots involved but managing your mind and your emotions set you up for life.”

Asked what he would say to young people dreaming of playing the tour and getting rich and famous he says keep it up: “Your dreams can definitely become a reality. Practice signing that winning check, practice giving that special autograph, lay back with your eyes closed and visualize winning a major championship. This is a start. The next step is to decipher through research what the best players in the world do and have done in order to get where they have gotten.”

In the short-term you can visualize getting recruited for college. What’s involved there? Practice and hard work. “You have to put the time in…Quantity of practice is important, but quality steers the ship. Create a golf resume, create a golf video and the number one thing is to work very hard in class and make sure your grades are stellar. Bottom line….no good grades, no good golf.”

Some foods are definitely better than others to eat before a workout. Here’s a pdf I like to share with my golfers on what to eat before a workout. Click here to download the pdf.

Pre-exercise

Before all of our competitions, we all think about what we should eating before and after rounds. Leading into the rounds, we should be consuming carbohydrates. The carbs are foods that are broken down during workouts and they will definitely give you energy.

This doesn’t mean that you gorge yourself closer to the competition. The quantity of the meal should be smaller the closer to the competition.

Post competition meals or refueling is similar, but different in that now there are also be a similar focus on proteins. The protein is needed to repair and build muscle. Both carbohydrates and protein is necessary for maximum recovery.

Consistency and timing will be uber important for maintaining a proper nutritional outlook. Refueling within 30 to 60 minutes after workouts and hydrating will help shape your performance.  Great rehydrating options include (water, ½ and ½ Gatorade, coconut water, muscle milk, chocolate milk).

Tips

  • Don’t skip breakfast or any meal
  • Include protein with every meal
  • Get an ample amount of rest (reach for at least 8 hours of sleep)
  • Stick to your training
  • Stretch early in your day, during the day and at the end of the day
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs
  • Eat balanced and often
  • Attack your diet like you attack preparing for the course
  • Set realistic goals
  • Be smart and careful if taking supplements. Always check the NCAA website for approved supplements
  • Make sure golf bag is packed with proper snacks during every practice and every tourney round.
  • Eat something every 2 to 3 holes
  • Sip on something on each hole

This is truly the evolution of success.
